Teaching Using Blogs #3

Hurrah, this makes me feel like I'm not the only one struggling with making online classes and blogging effective. My goals are still so far ahead of me. Thanks to your patience and participation we'll all get there together.

PS. I'm feeling a little alone out here as I keep watching other CSE694 blogs for more wild ideas. Help!

  1. I am trying to find something that interest me in blogging. More of the usual stuff !! I am still having mixed feeling on blogging and the classroom. I am looking and I am sure with determination I will find something. As per the article above the benefit in blogging is that all the students can see the other student work and in this it is shared. But replying to each others blogs can be very laborious-I suppose it all depends how many students are in the class.

  2. In thinking about the blogging my students do, I realize they probably aren't really "blogging." I am using it as a convenient online tool. Sometimes they respond to each others blogs, other times they just get in, get writing, get out. I think there is a time a place for both. Sometimes, I want them to think things through and get their thoughts down. Sometimes, I want them to practice their mechanics. Sometimes, I want them to do research. A blog is a convenient place to do all these things and keep them in one spot. It also makes it available to other students so they can read, comment, and get ideas from others. I think you just have to start using it and see how it works best for you.

  3. I enjoyed the article and, especially the idea of combining a peer-reviewed journal article with online blogging or discussion boards. I think my goals are ahead of me too because I realize that marketable online content should be "sexy." But I don't feel that my blog is there yet. Also, I don't want myself (or my future students) to get completely caught up in the appearance and forget that blogging should improve and increase our communication about a topic.

  4. The way I used blogs in my class were in two ways. First I used it as an RSS feed for our podcasts. Second, I used it as a writing prompt. I prompted and students were expected them to write an appropriate blog response. That kept it to only one blog that all 31 of us participated in. Then we went back together and went over the responses and conversed about them. That way they could practice writing and get constructive feedback. We always did the compliment sandwich.

  5. I'm still trying to get a handle on how I can use blogging with my K-5 grade students. I do see a great use for informing parents and family of what is going on in the classroom and around the school. Beyond that it’s hard for me to come up with any concrete ideas. So this week-end I will spend some time searching the web for this valued information. Perhaps I will stumble on some great advice.

  6. The blog that a teacher at my school set up seemed more like a website. She had tons of links for extra help/info. on particular subjects, reading list suggestions for different ages/grades (We all teach, or can be assigned students from K-12), announcements, general school news and was taking a survey on something where they just had to vote yes/no. I am assuming she changes this "poll" type feature from time to time as well as posting its' results. Just another way of using the Blog "generically" for multi age groups, not college leve.
