Teaching Using Blogs #2

I think I'm missing something. Maybe because I'm never taught elementary school. Maybe it's like when we were in China and asked to be on a panel of judges, who were mostly Chinese, in a cooking contest. What we typically considered anything but "winning" won. Who knows.

Mr. C.'s Class Blog used many features and for youngsters, quite intriguing but, help me, what am I missing that makes this a nominee for "Best Blog?" http://mrcsclassblog.blogspot.com/

It certainly opens the door for doing whatever you want.

  1. After looking at this blog, I have to say I don't think you're missing something. I see an interesting and visually appealing blog. But I wouldn't choose this particular blog as an example of great blogging for teachers. I understand that these are elementary school teachers and they are trying not overwhelm their students. So if this is a nominee for "Best Blog" maybe that means the other blogs aren't that spectacular either. Or it could mean that this is one of the few teachers who consistently used a blog. I've seen some of the past winners for edublogs.org and I was really impressed with some of those. So maybe a different site and a different set of judges would have a higher set of standards. Their best individual blog of the year is Free Technology for Teachers. It's certainly interesting, but I don't know if it's the best educational blog I have seen this year. Perhaps the idea is that the blogger should provide a service. In this case, the author is giving us information about technology. So if he fulfills his promise, perhaps that makes him the best.

  2. You aren't the only one that felt that way (just look at the votes.) The telling statement in your post is that it opens the doors to do whatever. I can live with that. There are many different uses for blogs and my class blog has changed through the years. It is going through a huge change this year because my position has changed.

The great thing about education blogs is the teachers have the opportunity to create something that works for their students. My blog is a tool, nothing more. I would love to hear your thoughts on what makes a great class blog.
